This mature lime tree, situated in the client’s rear garden, had been heavily reduced several years prior. Unfortunately, many of the original cuts appeared to have been made indiscriminately, which led to dense, intertwined regrowth that complicated future maintenance.
The client had a clear and specific vision for how they wanted the tree to be reduced this time. Meeting those expectations while also adhering to BS3998 (British Standard for Tree Work) presented several challenges. The previous pruning had left the tree with awkward growth patterns, making it difficult to find appropriate reduction points that encouraged healthy regrowth from strong unions.
This was very much a team effort. Extra eyes on the ground were essential to guide the climber and help achieve the most natural and balanced shape possible under the circumstances. The goal was not just to meet the client’s vision, but also to preserve the tree’s long-term health and structure.
This job is a good example of how compromise between best arboricultural practices and customer expectations can lead to a satisfying outcome for all parties.
